Reflections: Obama Watch!
There can be no doubt that the world hated George W. Bush. And when the election rolled around you could have probably put a poorly educated goldfish up for presidential candidate against the republicans and it would have most likely won. And the said goldfish would probably also be awarded the Nobel peace prize simply for the supreme achievement of not being George W. Bush. And it would probably have run the country better. But regardless of who the democrats put up as an opponent against the republican party there can also be no doubt that Obama is well loved around the world, whether or not it is for his achievements, the fact that he is the first black president of the USA, or the simple fact that he isn't a peanut brained, warmongering, babbling, incoherent, thoughtless scumbag.
But putting all those possible reasons aside there is one thing that certainly is clear: Obama is positively adored in the continent of Africa. You simply cannot go anywhere and to any African country without running into delightful little tributes to the latest American president. Most come in the form of souvenirs and merchandise, such as t-shirts, belts, badges and underwear, yes you heard that last one right! Other forms of adulation towards the half Kenyan leader include shop and restaurant names (like Obama Fast Food or Obama Restaurant), laundry bags and suitcases and even food. The latter was presented to us when 'PS2' Gav came back to the truck with a big bag full of 'Obama Biscuits' which we all tucked into and enjoyed, you can really taste the freedom!
I must say I was quite pleased to see all the tributes to Barack pouring in. Admittedly I haven't been following American politics much since the election so my fondness for Obama is also based on the fact that he isn't George 'Dubbyah' but more importantly I thought it was time for the world to love America again. Because America really is a great place. The USA is a huge, exciting, sprawling landmass with so many wonderful and varied places to see, Alaska and Hawaii being two of, but by no means my only favourite places. The people are almost always friendly and outgoing and there really isn't anything you can't buy there, and for a bargain to boot (except perhaps a beer that doesn't taste like piss).
So then world, why not give America another chance to redeem itself and win your heart eh? Book your flights to New York, rent a car, go on a road trip across the continent and rediscover the American dream! I know I want to!
But let me just get across Africa first!
